starlight

starlight manifested as a temporary community art space on Devon Avenue, open from September 14-October 29, 2022. starlight is an extension of Aao Mil Baithen, a project of SpaceShift Collective.

We took over an empty storefront and transformed it into starlight - a community arts space with an evolving exhibition, reading nook and listening station.

We partnered with the Race, Caste, and Colorism Project at Northwestern University and brought on six resident artists to explore those themes and what they may mean for Black and South Asian solidarity.

starlight hosted over 40 programs including workshops, discussions, story circles, concerts, flood relief fundraisers and even a disco dance party. We had more than 1,000 people participate!

starlight was open to the public 5 days a week. Best of all, all the programs, food and drink in the space were absolutely free and open to anyone.
