Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design
From 2018 - 2020, I was Curator of Programs, leading the public engagement efforts of a museum reinventing itself. In addition to public programs, education, tours and digital media, some of the greatest impact was made through immersive artist residencies. Engaging communities represented by the museum’s collection as well as communities present in Hawai’i was of particular importance to me.
Papermoon Puppet Theater
Papermoon Puppet Theater came to Shangri La and reimagined the museum with a magical, site-specific original production in collaboration with Hawai’i-based musicians. Audiences were moved to tears as they walked through the museum and absorbed the non-verbal stories told through the puppets.
Studio Revolt
Studio Revolt: Anida Yoeu Ali and Masahiro Sugano workshopped and debuted their newest work Red Chador: Regenesis I in collaboration with Hawai’i based movement artists. The work included public components in Waimanalo, Waikiki as well as a filmed aspects at Shangri La.
The Reminders
The Reminders created a powerful impact during their residency by interpreting the museum and its collection through their own ‘detour’, teaching creative expression workshops for young people and performing at a collaborative museum festival.
